Château Prieuré-Lichine, a Margaux AOC Grands Crus Classés Estate
The Prieuré de Cantenac vineyard was founded in the 10th century by the monks of the Vertheuil Abbey. The château was named after its former owner, Alexis Lichine, nicknamed the “Pope of Wine” in Bordeaux.
This historical wine estate is now owned by the Ballande group and is one of the 21 Margaux AOC grand crus classés. The Château Prieuré-Lichine vineyard is renowned for its fine red wines and obtained level 3 High Environmental Value (HVE) certification in 2019. It was a pioneer in wine tourism and is one of the most visited sites in the Bordeaux region.
Each year, tourists from all over the world come to discover the estate’s vines, wine cellars, and tulip vat room, among others. It was awarded the Best of Wine Tourism prize in 2019 for the quality of its teams’ hospitality. Château Prieuré-Lichine wines are available in the boutique, a 2,000 sq. ft large circular room in which we have fitted professional wine counters.

Displaying Wine Bottles and Accessories In-store
The main objective for this wine space was to showcase the vineyard’s bottles, as well as wine tools, and boost sales in the boutique.
Each cuvée needed to be easily identifiable, with the estate’s wine bottles well-displayed and easy to handle so that visitors would reach for them naturally.
We had a large floor area to play with, so we positioned several wine display counters around the store:
- one tall Wine Merchant
- large Wine Counters
The Emblematic Wine Merchant
This large 7-foot-tall piece of wine furniture is both attractive and ergonomic. The Wine Merchant is intuitive, inviting users to grab a tasting glass hanging from the shelf, a sommelier corkscrew from the drawer, or a carefully stored bottle for tasting.
For the Château Prieuré-Lichine boutique, we opted for rows of slanted shelves for the bottom part of the steel structure to display the bottles, and drawers with wooden plaques. The Margaux grands crus classés are aligned and their labels subtly backlit.
We wanted the top part to be airy and bright, so we installed hanging tasting glass racks. We added metal plaques on the shelves for L’Atelier du Vin decanters, lit by bottle lights.

The Generous Wine Counter
The Wine Counter, a large and robust structure, features a 7.2-foot-long solid oak countertop, which is ideal for highlighting some of the boutique’s products. Each of the château’s cuvées is placed on a display and surrounded by wine tools.
The wine shelves on each counter in the boutique have a different layout that is adapted to the bottles and wine tools on display. They are lit by a LED light strip. Wine tools are displayed inside open sliding wooden drawers.
The slanted bottle racks include a space between each bottle so that they are easy to pick up. They alternate with horizontal shelving, on which L’Atelier du Vin’s opening, service, and preservation tools are displayed, to create a sense of balance.
